GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SEEDING AND GROWTH
PLANTING DATE: Using proper planting dates for food plot seed is crucial to ensuring optimal growth and development of the plants. Planting at the right time allows seeds to take full advantage of favorable weather conditions, including temperature and moisture levels. By aligning planting dates with the natural growing season of the chosen seeds, you can maximize germination rates and ensure robust seedling establishment. Early planting can lead to seedlings being exposed to late frosts or insufficient moisture, while late planting may result in inadequate time for growth before adverse weather sets in. Properly timed planting also helps in synchronizing the food plot with the peak nutritional needs of wildlife, providing them with a reliable food source when they need it most..
SOIL PREP: The best insurance for a successful stand is a well-prepared, firm seedbed that is free of weed competition. The soil should be worked or tilled to a depth of about six inches and then either rolled to slightly firm it up, or allow rains to settle the soil back down. Planting into a loose and fluffy soil can cause poor emergence if hard rains are experienced soon after planting.
SOIL FERTILITY: It is highly recommended to obtain a soil sample and have it professionally tested for fertility and pH levels. Proper nutrients are essential for seedling development. If the soil test indicates a deficiency in nutrients, a well balanced fertilizer should be applied per the test recommendations. It is preferable to apply fertilizer before tillage is complete.
PLANTING DEPTH: Due to the combination of large and small seeds, Trophy Magnet Plot Mixes should be planted approximately ¼ to ½ inch deep. Individual species can be planted at a depth suited to their seed size.
